File Transfer Protocol

HTML coding is transferred to the Internet using File Transfer Protocol (FTP). Web pages are uploaded to the user's webspace where they can then be viewed on the internet.

The simplest way to transfer web pages to the internet is to use an FTP client. We recommend FileZilla which is an open source program and free to use. The program is installed onto the users computer. Open the programme and select File>Site Manager

Filezilla Site Manager

Select New Site and enter login details (these should be available from your host provider)

Click Connect

There are two window panes. The right hand pane shows your uploaded website files. The left hand pane shows files on your computer. In the left hand pane navigate to your website files. To upload double click the file in the left hand pane, if it is a new file it will upload, if it is an updated file you will be asked whether you would like to overwrite the existing file.

Clicking on a file in the right hand pane will enable the file to be downloaded to your computer.
