Colour

The internet is a visual medium and colour can be used to enhance a site’s content and make the user's visit more enjoyable. However, if due care is not given to the selection of these elements, the site can become irritating, distracting or at worst unusable.

Computers display colours by merging varying degrees of red, green and blue. The latest computers are capable of displaying 16,777,216 colours while older models are restricted to 65,536 or less.

Colours used on the Internet are identified by a hex color using the symbol # followed by the relevant letters or numbers. Black is represented by the hex color #000000. The chart below can be used to generate the appropriate hex color code. Move the slider to the colour required then click the shade of that colour in the large window. The hex code and RGB numbers will be displayed. To save the colour code click in one of the bottom save windows.

When selecting a colour scheme for your website it is important to remember that different web browsers will interpret colours differently. There are, however, 216 colours that are deemed to be ‘safe colours’, colours that will display uniformly on all computers and by all browsers. It is then, important to select colours used on web pages from these 216 colours if visitor experience is to be enhanced. As a rule, it is also advisable to use a light coloured text on a dark background, or a dark coloured text on a light background. This also ensures that all users are able to access the information. Use the feature below to check how different texts look on different background colours.
